Life a unreal Drama
That we see will not exist; and hence it is not real and is not capable of permanent existence as all that we see is capable of death. We shall die one day and new body shall emerge with the same self [soul]; but we cannot see as we do not have that kind of senses provided by the Almighty. Thus what we see is not real and that which we cannot see is the reality. The soul is an entity of this nature.
1.Ehu n mUAw jo rihAw smwie ] (152-7, gauVI, mÚ 1)
The One who is pervading everywhere does not die.
Objective of life
It is, probably, the reality stated above that we have to recognize or appreciate as per the various edicts that are contained in SGGS ji that is the immediate objective of life and bigger goal would be to make the soul merge with the super-soul. I have my own style of writing and you shall bear with me for this and hope that I shall be able to put across myself that I really want to put forward. I shall try to provide the necessary ‘quotes’ from Granth Sahib ji so that what I discuss is within the permissible norms of Sikhi. I am sharing with you as I am doing an independent study of the Gurbani from this point of view. I have an interest in receiving comments from you. It is a selfish motive that makes me share the concepts that I have built so far. I am very grateful to respected Begum ji and japjisahib04 who have directly helped me for providing the necessary inputs. There are still some missing links that is being looked into. But major part is over. Hence this write up.
Shakespeare might have put it that life is a drama. It has been emphasised in Bani as follows:
2.AMimRq kwieAw rhY suKwlI bwjI iehu sMswro ] (154-17, gauVI cyqI, mÚ 1)
With your nectar-like body, you live in comfort, but this world is just a passing drama.
Reality /unreality and Human Senses
Our senses have made something unreal as real; as the physical body that we are attached to shall not remain forever and is unreal. What shall remain is that really exists; and that exists is not visible; and that is visible is not real. The pleasure that we derive and feel are on account of the senses and is momentary and is not real. What shall remain is obviously the ‘soul’ or the ‘jeo’/jeev as is termed in Gurbani. Thus the life and the entire phenomenon is an illusion but we take it as a real.
Gurbani has stated this at many places in various formats. I am quoting for my own benefit so that if I feel lost I can refer back.
3.shsw iehu sMswru hY mir jMmY AwieAw jwieAw ] (138-18, mwJ, mÚ 2)
[This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation.]
The world that we see is false and is an illusion is again stated beautifully as follows:
4.JUTw iehu sMswru ikin smJweIAY ] (147-15, mwJ, mÚ 1)
[This world is false, but only a few understand this.]
Hence we are all guests/travelers here having our destinations as ordained by ‘waheguru’ ji
5.vwt n kreI mwmlw jwxY imhmwxu ] (148-9, mwJ, mÚ 2)
[Do not involve yourself in idle business on the way; remember that you are only a guest here.]
Again I quote below the following that expresses the helplessness of the human body and the limited intellect that has been bestowed upon it.
6.hm jMq ivcwry ikAw krh sBu Kylu qum suAwmI ] (167-19, gauVI bYrwgix, mÚ 4)
[What can these wretched creatures do? This whole drama is Yours, O Lord and Master.]
One can quote many other ‘Tuks’ in this regard if one really feels interested.
Journey Of Soul through Body
The travel/journey of the body is summed up in Gurbani as follows:
7.ds bwlqix bIs rvix qIsw kw suMdru khwvY ] (138-2, mwJ, mÚ 1)
At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome.
8.cwlIsI puru hoie pcwsI pgu iKsY sTI ky boFypw AwvY ] (138-2, mwJ, mÚ 1)
At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips, and at sixty, old age is upon him.
9.sqir kw miqhIxu AsIhW kw ivauhwru n pwvY ] (138-3, mwJ, mÚ 1)
At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties.
10. nvY kw ishjwsxI mUil n jwxY Ap blu ] (138-3, mwJ, mÚ 1)
At ninety, he lies in his bed, and he cannot understand his weakness.
At the end the body dies and that remains is in essence is a part of the ‘Sat’ that we call as jeev/jeo or soul or spirit.
Jeev/Jeo/Soul and attributes
Thus that which is real is what has been stated as ‘jeev’/jeo’ as ‘soul’ or ‘Atma’ at various places in Gurbani. The soul is the part of the un manifest part of the God Himself and is permanent and is real in nature. It cannot be otherwise.
11.iehu hir Dnu jIAY syqI riv rihAw jIAY nwly jwie ] (511-4, gUjrI kI vwr, mÚ 3)
[This wealth of the Lord is embedded in the soul, and with the soul, it shall depart].
However, Maya is the enticer and does not permit the merger of the soul with the super soul.
12.kwieAw imtI AMDu hY pauxY puChu jwie ] (511-1, gUjrI kI vwr, mÚ 3)
[The body is merely blind dust; go, and ask the soul.]
13. hau qw mwieAw moihAw iPir iPir Awvw jwie ] (511-1, gUjrI kI vwr, mÚ 3)
[The soul answers, "I am enticed by Maya, and so I come and go, again and again."]
The soul has typical characteristics that it cannot be created or can be destroyed or is subject to death. It is imperishable. There are some other attributes attached to this phenomenon.
14.nw jIau mrY n fUbY qrY ] (151-9, gauVI, mÚ 1)
[The soul does not die; it does not drown, and it does not swim across.]
15.Ehu n bwlw bUFw BweI ]1] rhwau ] (378-15, Awsw, mÚ 5)
[But the soul is neither young nor old, O Siblings of Destiny.]
Guru Saahiban have urged that we should realize this big difference between real and unreal. The element of ‘Sat’ is present in all of us and it is the part that is prevailing and is all pervading and hence; ‘He is present in all the bodies’.
16.sdw sdw Awqm prgwsu ] (378-16, Awsw, mÚ 5)
[Forever and ever, the soul is illumined]
He is in the heart of every one. All of us are bound to ‘waheguru’ through this linkage. It is the common element in all of us. The following provides the necessary clue to each one of us as to what is the purpose of coming here.
17.jwqo jwie khw qy AwvY ] (152-15, gauVI, mÚ 1)
[How can we know where we came from?]
18. kh aupjY kh jwie smwvY ] (152-15, gauVI, mÚ 1)
[Where did we originate, and where will we go and merge?]
19. ikau bwiDE ikau mukqI pwvY ] (152-15, gauVI, mÚ 1)
[How are we bound, and how do we obtain liberation?]
20. ikau AibnwsI shij smwvY ]1] (152-16, gauVI, mÚ 1)
[How do we merge with intuitive ease into the Eternal, Imperishable Lord? ]
We cannot see it nor can we realize this so easily as our intellect, in normal course, is covered with the filth that is provided by the senses and keeps the mind fully covered up as the glass covered with dust. Supreme human beings with fine and refined intellect could have realized this. Many sages have done this and have realized HIM.I cannot do it as my logic and my intellect is covered with the all that has to be removed with the methods and techniques stated in Granth sahib ji.and the kind help of persons like Begum ji and japjisahib04 and almost all. The body and soul are separate have been beautifully summed up as follows:
21.kwieAw hMs ikAw pRIiq hY ij pieAw hI Cif jwie ] (510-19, gUjrI kI vwr, mÚ 3)
[What love is this between the body and soul, which ends when the body falls?]
Basic Logic Of the creation
A Question
To this extent the things are clear to me. However, there should be some basic reasoning as to why this creation was created by the Almighty is not clear. It does not appear to common human logic that the One who created us wants us to go back and merge back into HIM. The simple answer to this complex problem can be sought for by simply saying that HE should not have created us at all if HE had desired that we merge into HIM or Does HE want us to make an effort to merge with HIM.[ Else one would have made an argument that if HE really wants to merge with HIM then HE can do in a wink and in that case there is no need of express manifestation of the Super consciousness into individual consciousness.] I would be grateful if one can provide an input as to the reason of the creation/universe. It should be clearly supported by the Gurbani and SGGS ji.
Sabad/Naam/Word Of Sabad
I cannot provide any answer and I am also not aware if there are some provisions in Gurbani as to the real purpose of creation in explicit form. There are, of course, provisions that this creation was created by the Almighty by way of an expression of ‘sabad’ or ‘word of sabad’ or ‘naam’ that are treated as synonyms by various writers and commentators. Nonetheless, it is a grey area. Only Gurbani has stated about this.
