Guru Nanak gave us a true profound wisdom concerning the essence of what it is to be truly religious.This school of learning has now become an identity in itself, all True Religions have Truth in Common and are universally opposed to the same things, but we rarely talk about this, perhaps we are afraid we will lose our distinct identity as Sikh.When you have learnt the truth you can call yourself anything.
Point B If I study an orange will I taste the juice? Now we know we must drink in the juice by squeezing the whole and then you have it as God intended. The same goes for religion,the orange stands for Sikhism and the peel is the hierology, you need to look at the peel but then remove it and move onto the next step or you may become locked in the liturgy .Drinking in the juice means to be holy and the refreshing taste is to realise it’s truth and refresh your Self.The same applies to the apple of Christianity and the avocado of Islam.
Now you know your apples from your oranges can we pray in a personal way and not as a fruit:
Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
Sir Francis Drake, Vice Admiral (1540 - 1596)
