JALANDHAR: A fresh controversy has surrounded the scheduled election of Takht Patna Sahib Management Board on Sunday evening as president of the outgoing Board, Mohinder Singh Romana, a Punjab based Shiromani Akali Dal leader, has "cancelled" the election meeting called by Senior vice president of the Board.
Romana has issued a communication claiming that the election meeting called by the Sr VP was illegal as he was not consulted for the meeting as only the president was authorized to call the meeting. "The meeting is illegal and if any election would be held then it would be null and void," Roamana told TOI over phone.
He said that he had not authorized Sr VP Mohinder Singh Chhabra to call the meeting. However his claims are not expected to be taken seriously by the members of the Board who don't owe allegiance to Badals led SAD.
It is learnt that the election was cancelled after it became clear that SAD nominee would not be in a position to win the election as out of total 15 members, SAD could have only five members with it despite all the maneuverings.
Interestingly while Roama "cancelled' the meeting while sitting at his home in Faridkot, Punjab, by sending a telegram to Management Board office in Patna sahib SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar and all members of the new Board have already reached Patna Sahib. Makkar told TOI from Patna Sahib that after this communication by Romana he would not attend the election meeting. He said that Roaman had informed the Board office through a telegram on Saturday.
While Sr VP Chhabra could not be available for comments Makkar told TOI over phone from Patna sahib that they would not bee attending the meeting as President had "cancelled" it. He argued that only president was authorized to call the meeting or it should have been called after consulting him, he said.
However DSGMC President Parmjit Singh Sarna, who is lobbying to defeat SAD in this election, said that Roamana could not cancel the meeting as the meeting was called when he was abroad and Sr VP was functioning as President.
