It is 6.12.07. had the chance to listen to Gyani Maskeen ji at about 8.45 a.m. on Punjabi etc. He was discussing ‘Four stages of spirituality’. It was the second lecture of the series of the four. I missed the first one and also I am not sure if I shall be able to attend the next two as well.

In case I do listen I shall post the briefs that I shall prepare. But since I am not sure of attending to the next two I shall try to give suitable heading to each write up as per my understanding.

In todays’s pravachan gyani ji informed two things:

Two types of Karmas and actions

· karmas that are recorded and registered in our mind,

and

· karmas that are not recorded or registered in mind

Introduction

We do our jobs in two manners:

One: where there is involvement of body and mind
Two: where there is involvement of body only [mind is absent]

It is immaterial whether the mind is present while attending to a particular job or not if some if the work is of material nature or where there is no reward or risk of the society. In doing such a job, without involvement of the mind, there are chances are that such a job will become mechanical in nature. However, in case where the job is done with full involvement of the mind and full consciousness it is likely that such a job will not be mechanical in nature and this will tend to have a lasting effect on the mind as the work or the job done will leave some sort of impression on the mind as the mind is fully involved and engaged in the job.

In terms of spirituality

One can again classify the work done into the following two categories:

A] job done where there is no involvement of body but full involvement of mind.
B] job where there is involvement of mind and body.

In the case of A and B the mind will register the thoughts. In such cases the effect will be that the thought pattern will get ingrained in our future actions and hence over a period of time these will be part our habit. This happens on account of the fact that our behavior will be governed by the underlying thoughts that have been registered by the mind. These types of jobs will have a lasting effect on mind. It was explained in the context of naam jaap.

Naam jap

In case we recite the name of Lord without mind being involved in the process, the activity will not have positive effect as the mind is not involved in it and no positive benefit will be attained by the seeker/devotee. However, in case one is doing the naam jap with full concentration and attention that such a jap will have positive effect as the mind is involved in it. Likewise, if we recite the Gurbani without the presence of mind, our reading/reciting bani will be of no use as it shall not have any effect. Such kind of jaap are useless as these are mechanical.

One should try to do the jaap /jap with full involvement of the mind and such type of jaaps will have effect on the mind and it will over a period of time will become our habit and nature as well and one will rise spiritually as well.

Prabh ki Ustat karo Mere Meet
Savdhan …Ekagar cheet……………..

How to cultivate the mind

A great effort is required to cultivate the mind so that it is also engaged in the process of doing a job. It is quite difficult and that is why Gurbani emphasizes:

Akhan Aukha Prabh ka Noa………………………

And

Jini Naam dhiyaya Gaye mashakat Ghal……
Nanak thee Mukf Ujale……………….Naal
