AMRITSAR: Distribution of 450 birs of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Italy by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has attracted controversy after the delegation that accompanied the birs complained of non-cooperation and misbehaviour by office-bearers of National Sikh Dharam Parchar Committee (NSDPC) there.

In retaliation, the Italy-based committee has also levelled serious charges against SGPC delegation following which Akal Takht jathedar summoned NSDPC head Harwant Singh Daduwal to appear before five high priests at Akal Takht secretariat on July 22.

SGPC had sent the birs in April on the request of Italian gurdwaras.

The birs were sent in special vehicles up to Mumbai from where they were sent to Italy by ship with "Punj Pyaras" delegation of SGPC, which included general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, secretary Dalmegh Singh and information officer Dalbir Singh Fauji. Sources said the committee, a conglomerate of various gurdwaras of Italy, had not cooperated with the SGPC team, and was dictating terms regarding distribution of the birs following which the SGPC's delegation filed a complaint with the jathedar.

Bhaur told TOI on Monday, "Yes, there was some issue, but we have decided only to discuss it before the jathedar."

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh confirmed that he had received a complaint from SGPC's delegation. He said he had issued summons to Daduwal to appear before five high priests to clarify his stand on July 22.
