Inderjit Singh Hassanpuri (1932 - 2009)

Inderjit Singh Hassanpuri, a renowned Ludhiana Personality, had seen a very hard time in his childhood, but his hard work and distinction as Movie Producer, Director and Film Song Writer and especially Punjabi Folk Songs has given him identification world wide.


Inderjit Hassanpuri became the most successful and most loved lyricist of the Punjabi Singers and Punjabi movies. He has written songs for Hindi Films also. Up till now almost every singer has sung his songs. He was very happy when the renowned singer of the bollywood Mohamad Rafi sang his song. Hassanpuri after living in Bollywood and contributing to the world of Punjabi films has come back to Ludhiana.


Inderjit Hassanpuri born to Smt. Bhagwan Kaur Sembhi on 20th August 1932 in village Akalgarh, District ludhiana. His father Jaswant Singh Kharal was a renowned contractor of Delhi and then most of the buildings near Barakhambha chowk, Cannaught Place, Lodhi Road were constructed by him only.


Inderjit Hassanpuri had his primary education from Delhi. In 1947 he had seen the bad face of the life; he lost his father and left all the belonging at Delhi due to communal riots. This was the tough time for the family. Then He got his further education from his village Hassanpur, District Ludhiana. He also started to paint sign board to earn both ends meals.


Inderjit Hassanpuri first came to the school stage when he was in the 4th class & with his very first performance; he became the favorite singer and lyricist of the teachers & students. On every weekend, he has to sing his new poem in the school. He had continued this for many years in his schools in Delhi as well as Hassanpur.


His first poetry book “AUNSIAN” was released in 1959, “Samey Di Awaz" in 1962/65 and "Zindgi De Geet" in 1966. Then he hasn’t looked back and started to step up the ladder of success. Inderjit Hassanpuri availed every opportunity which God has provided to him. He has written for film, Television serial, Tele Films as well as beautiful songs with full essence of Punjabi Culture. He has never used any vulgar language in his song and due to this quality he become the most popular lyricist among renowned singers of India and abroad. His lyrics have been sung by all the top singers, like Mohamad Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Jagjit Singh, Mana Dey, Surinder Shinda, Charanjit Chani (Alaap fame), Malkeet Singh (Golden Star) Manjit Kundal (UK) etc.


Actor Dharmendra is his good old friend and he had also released his book, “Dasam Granth”, chiefly meant to educate Sikh children on the lives of the Gurus. This book has been appreciated by the Sikh community overseas. Inderjit Hassanpuri contribution to Indian and Punjabi Cinema can never be obsolete. He has written and produced feature films “Teri Meri Ek Jindri" "Daaj" "Sukhi Parivar" and "Dahej" (Hindi). He has written songs for many films like "Man Jeete Jagjeet" "Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam" "Pappi Tere Anek" " Fauji Chacha" "Choran Nu More", "Jai Mata Di" "Long da lishkara", "Sangram", "Waqat ke Sehzade" etc. and this unending journey is still continuing.
Hassanpuri has written famous songs like ‘Kurti mulmul di, dhai din na jawani rehndi’ sung by ghazal singer Jagjit Singh while his wife, Chitra, gave her voice to Hassanpuri’s song ‘charkha mera rangla, vich sone dian mekhan, ne mein teno yaad karan, jad charkhe nu dekhan’. He has made many documentaries concerning serious topics. He made an educational documentary on the ‘blue revolution’, titled ‘Machali te Paani’. He made another one on ‘development of sugarcane’. His documentary on Kandi Area and its development shot in a very authentic manner was well liked.
Hassanpuri has visited so many countries. Ramgarhia Council UK had also honored his services. He is decorated with many awards and honours in India and overseas. The Punjabi Sahitya Akademi has conferred S. Kartar Singh Dhaliwal Award on Hassanpuri for his works; where as the Professor Mohan Singh Foundation has conferred the Puran Singh Award for "The Best Song Writer" on him. Hassanpuri has won innumerable awards, written many songs and has served the cause of Punjabi literature.
He got married to Smt. Surinder Kaur Virdi in 1953. The couple is blessed with one daughter and three sons.
