Imagine the first orange on earth you started studying the peel and then dissected the orange, you will ofcourse lose all the juice in the process. Now we know we must drink in the juice, by squeezing the whole and then you have it pure as God intended. The same goes for religion, say this orange stands for Sikhism and the peel is the hierology, you need to look at the peel (study what is holy) but then remove it or you may become an orange scholar (studier of religion).That not the point of an orange or religion. Drinking in the pure essence means to be holy and not just knowing what is holy.The refreshing taste is to realise it’s truth and refresh your Self.
