Hairs and Sikh

Hello all

Why am I a Sikh?

The truth is, because I was born to the Sikh parents.

You know, what I don’t understand is the significance of the physical identity in Sikhism, the whole religion and the teachings are about spirituality and how to detach ourselves from the physical and materialistic things and yet in the end it comes down to only one thing and that is ‘do you PHYSICALLY tie a turban’? If not you are not a true Sikh. Is that true? Is that what our Gurus will think of us if we go and cut our hair. I personally don’t think so.

Now, I am a Sardar, never have cut my hair, tie a turban and have been living in western hemisphere for few years now. I look good in turban, it has become my identity and I love myself in it and I think people do too. But the question I want to ask every turban tying Sikh on this website is have they not ever thought what if they did not have to get up early and not have to tie the turban. I am sure many have. Now you will say that’s not the point the point is that we commit ourselves what our Guru Gobind gave us. I agree.

But, does anyone here believe that GOD, one supreme GOD, which is the GOD of all, will force anything on us all. He has given us all the religions and holy scriptures which guide us on how to live our lives but in the end it comes down to our own choices and we are judged on our doings on the judgement day. Is that right?

Many of us here know that Khalsa was formed by Guru Gobind Singh ji. We have serious believers all around the world who will not stop for a breath when talking about the hairs and their significance in Sikhism. But I personally don’t think they all know how Guru Gobind lived his life and follow his way of life. Many of the mothers today will cry their eyes out if their sons go out and cut their hair, but will they sacrifice their son’s life, just like Guru Gobind singh ji did. The point I am trying to make is our all gurus came in this world to show us how to live spiritually, how to live happily, how to love and how to live in a realm which is higher and takes us closer to GOD. That’s the key.
We were 11 sardars in our batch when we joined college, after 3 years only 2 were left including me. Rest had cut their hairs. But I would like to tell you something, all 9 of them would like to grow their hairs back and would love to tie that beautiful turban they once used to tie. But they wont do it, you know why, cos they don’t have the freedom to cut it again, and by freedom I don’t mean physical freedom, I mean the social freedom, they all don’t want to go through that pain again which they had to when they did it first time. Parents stopped talking, neighbours gossiped, grandparents cried, relatives wouldn’t look at you in family gatherings, a feeling of an outcast. Now does any human being deserve that just because he has cut his hair. For one second lets forget that we have a religion, lets just think we are human beings who have one GOD, things start to become clearer.

Freedom, I think, is the key here. Freedom is something GOD gave us when he created us. Our soul is free.

Does keeping the hairs and tying the turban have such big significance in the kingdom of GOD?

Please reply, as I would like to know what you all think.
