Miracles....Miracles...and more miracles....
No religion or prophet - real or psuedo...ancient or modern...seems to be complete without its range of miracles...
BUT what does the GURBANI...of the Sikh Gurus have to say about "miracles"...

First lets see what Guru Nanak ji...Founder of Sikhism has to say...
In Japji he declares.. "Ridh Sidh Avra saadh.....miracles..miraculous powers....magic..etc etc..are...waste of time....of no value whatsoever....practically useless...

In Slok Vaar Maanjh mahalla 1...Guur Nanak ji continues...
"Pahiran agan hiveh ghar bandah bhojan saar karaeen.......Nanak nadar kareh jis upar sach NAAM vadiayee...Guur Nanak in Vaar Maanjh

IF I COULD clothe myself in Fire...and live in a house of ICE..eat only IRON as my food..or If I could drink up all PAIN as if water..and Carry the whole Earth ( World) before me..or if I could weigh the entire SKY with a mere piece of copper on one side of the scales...or IF I were to grow so big....couldnt be measured...or could drive all else before my will...or i possessed such powers that enables to me do my will/liked/pleased me...I would regard ALL these powers as a small gift from the CREATOR..who is Boundless...and whose gifts too are Boundless..BUT to the person to whom HE is really Merciful...He gives the GLORY of a DIFFERENT KIND...the kind acquired through the Gift of His NAAM...all other "gifts" are PETTY..when compared to the Supreme GIFT of the NAAM.....

It is a sad fact..that the life history of every founder of every religion..it are the followers who DISFIGURE the history with embellishments..miracles..strange powers..to prove the divinity of their prophet.... This disfigurement may have come through due to good faith..love..devotion etc etc for the Prophet..BUT it is never the less true that it is the result of muddles thinking. This even happened to Guru Nanak Ji and the follwoign Nine Gurus...even when they themsleves were aware of such shortcomings and weaknesses in over zealous devotees. Guur Ji must have come across such "devoted followers" miraculising, mystifying..deifying..and weaving false and exaggerated tales about HIM to others....this is abundantly clear from his Janamsakhis and history. THEREFORE the GURU took extra care and time to make the CONCEPT of GURU SHIP very very clear cut. Guru Ji DID NOT wnat any supernatural tales to be told about him...He wanted the people to look upon him only as a MAN...just as all other men were. In this CONTEXT the GURU expressed Himslef quite FORCEFULLY and UNEQUIVOCALLY. There cna be NO DOUBT about what the GURU SAYS and feels about such supernatural events/miracles.

The tragedy of "Sikh History" surroundign the Gurus...is that even Sikh Writers...distorted..wove imaginary "facts" and meaningless fables and legends..aroudn the VERY SIMPLE, BEAUTIFUL and NATURAL EVENTS in the Gurus lives. The so called miracles said to be performed by the GUrus...areerroneously and ill conceived notions and present a coloured and totally unintelligible picture and thus help to CONCEAL the real GURU and His Unique PERSONALITY. The GURUS are wrongly depicted as miracle men..but in addition to be "privileged Men of God" who had the power to BREAK GODS LAWS AT WILL. Perhaps this sort of writing provided these writers with the great satisfaction that their GURUS were unique prophets who represented the CREATOR in PERSON and so could BREAK HIS LAWS as and when required..

A few examples will clear this...
1. Guru Nanak ji aksed Bhai Lehna Ji to climb a Kikkar tree and shake it...out dropped sweet fruits and sweets
2. Guru Amardass Ji is approached by a devout Sikh Girdharee for a SON. The Guru at first tells him that this is sole discretion of the CREATOR..and NO ONE has the power to reverse Nature...but then naother devout Sikh..Bhai paro intercedes on hsi behalf..and Girdharee gets five sons...
3. Guru Ram Dass Ji tells a devout Sikh that ONLY the CREATOR has the power to grant gifts like children...yet wehn the Sikh insists..the GURU promises him four sons...
etc
etc....even the End of the Lifetime of the GURU on this earth is not spared...when Guru Nanak ji passed away..it is said that His Body disappeared and left behind only flowers which were shared by his Hindu and Muslim follwers...

The GURUS are made to appear self contradictory...what they do in real life is NOT what they write in Gurbani......and such self contradictions appear not only at different events..BUT sometimes in the SAME EVENT !!...
